Daily 5

DAILY 5

Daily 5 is an important part of our class.

In order to become a better reader, there are 5 skills we work on EVERY DAY!

Read to Self

The best way to become a better reader is to practice reading every day, with books that are at your just-right reading level.

Partner Reading

Reading to someone allows you to practice reading strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, and hearing your own voice.

Writing

Reading and writing go hand in hand. Daily practice of writing is the best way to become a better writer.

Word Work

The more you understand words and spelling patterns the more fluent a writer you become. With word work you practice spelling patterns, experiment with words, and memorize high-frequency words.

Listen to Reading

By listening to teacher read-alouds or books on tape kids can hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. We hear new words and expand our vocabulary.

Leprechauns

We heard that tricky leprechauns like to sneak into classrooms on the eve of St. Patrick's Day and cause mischief...
so we decided to build Leprechaun Traps to try to catch those tricky little guys!

Maximo built a fantastic trap.  He made a huge rainbow that will definitely attract a leprechaun.  If you look closely, he placed a treasure box filled with gold, coins, and glitter, under the green box. The green box has been propped up with a stick. Invisible fishing line is tied to the stick. When the leprechaun comes and tries to grab the pot of gold, he will trip over the fishing line and pull the stick down. When the stick falls, the box will fall down and trap the leprechaun!

Cristina made a very clever trap.  She made a trail that led to a treasure box. Cristina knows that leprechauns don't follow the rules, so she made 2 signs to trick them. One says "Leprechauns are not welcome" and the other says "Stay away from the gold!" The trail leads to a ladder that climbs into the treasure box. When the leprechaun climbs into the treasure box, the lid is spring loaded and will quickly shut trapping him inside!

Maria Monica is confident she will catch a leprechaun with her trap. She has decorated a box with glitter, gold, and lots of money. When the leprechaun climbs onto the top of the box he will grab for the money in the center. When he steps on the center of the box, he will fall through a trap door and be caught inside the trap!

Valeria's trap was painted green. She wrote the words "Free Gold" and "Do Not Enter" to trick the leprechauns.  When a leprechaun follows the trail to the pot of gold inside the box it becomes so disoriented that it can not find it's way out.

Rossinho has a very YUMMY trap that is sure to catch a leprechaun. The leprechaun will follow a trail of money and candies up a flight of stairs. At the top of the stairs there is a sign that says, "Gold Inside! Do Not Touch." Hanging from the top of a trap door is a cocosette, (Venezuela's Yummiest Treat!)  When the leprechaun reaches for the cocosette, he will fall into the trap and can not get out!

Glenn had a brilliant idea for his trap. He took his bird cage and transformed it into a trap filled with gold, candies, and treasures. He found a shiny gold box that he made into a drawbridge. The leprechaun will follow the trail of gold across the drawbridge and climb into the bird cage. As he enters into the trap, the cage door will shut and the drawbridge will close! GOT HIM!

Gregory decorated a box with green paint, gold, and signs that say, "Free Gold".  He has propped up the box with a stick that is tied to a string. Inside the box he has placed a pile of gold in the center of the trap. The Leprechaun will follow a trail that says, "Free Gold". When the leprechaun grabs the gold, he will pull the string and the box will fall on top of him!

Sean has built a leprechaun village. He made a trail of gold that travels through the center of town. At the end of the trail there is a trap that is disguised with shiny green paper. There is a rope that hangs from the box and a sign that says, "Gold inside, do not climb the rope!" The leprechaun will not be able to resist climbing the rope. When he gets to the top of the box he will fall through a trap door and be TRAPPED!

Ana has made a trap that is covered in green!  The leprechaun will follow a trail of money to the top of the trap. When he gets to the top he will fall down a slide and be stuck at the bottom of the trap!

As we left the classroom the day before St. Patrick's Day we set up our traps throughout the classroom. We could hardly wait to see if we would catch a leprechaun.

We hurried to school the next morning to find...

FOOTPRINTS!!!!

Those mischievous leprechauns made a HUGE mess of our classroom!!!

Our traps were destroyed, our books were thrown on the floor,

Our chairs were even turned over!

Those sneaky leprechauns have tricked us this year, but we have not given up...

We have already started planning our traps for next year!!!
